In March, Schiff and Whitford accompanied fellow West Wing alum Martin Sheen to Capitol Hill, to promote the “Faces of the Employee Free Choice Act,” a grassroots and public relations campaign featuring real workers impacted by the inadequacies of labor laws. Standing with those who have been harassed, punished, and fired for their support of a union, they spoke to policymakers and the media about the benefits union membership provides. The men also accompanied workers to congressional offices urging members to support the Employee Free Choice Act. Their presence at our groundbreaking lobby day helped energize the call for real labor law reform. Since Schiff’s early days as a taxi driver, he has been a member of nine unions. His job experiences before his success as an actor shaped his views on the strong need for workers’ rights. Schiff serves on the board of advisors for the Creative Coalition, is a regular contributor to the Independent, and has received awards from the Council for a Livable World and the Weingart Center for the Homeless. Whitford, also a union member, joined the Board of Directors of American Rights at Work in 2004. He is actively involved in numerous causes, including the Union of Concerned Scientists, Heifer International, and the Children’s Defense Fund. In 2002, he started Clothes Off Our Back, hosting charity auctions of celebrity clothing to benefit children’s charities. |
