2011: American Rights at Work's Founding Individuals and Organizations
Print
American Rights at Work honors those whose vision created an organization dedicated to defending and advancing organizing and bargaining rights, and built American Rights at Work into a vibrant partner of the labor movement.

Founding Committee: Paul Booth, Larry Cohen, Jeff Farmer, Mark Fleischman, Tom Snyder, Greg Tarpinian, and Tom Woodruff

Early Supporters: Stewart Acuff, Morton Bahr, William Bergfeld, Patti Devlin, Joseph Hansen, Edwin Hill, James Hoffa, Gerald McEntee, Christyne Neff, Jerry O'Connor, Terence O’Sullivan, Bruce Raynor, Elizabeth Shuler, Andrew Stern, John Sweeney, Richard Trumka, and John Wilhelm

Initial Labor Support: AFL-CIO, AFSCME, CWA, IBEW, IBT, LIUNA, SEIU, UFCW, and UNITE HERE

In 2003, a small group met regularly to strategize on changing the climate for organizing. Their vision led to the founding of American Rights at Work and American Rights at Work Education Fund.

They envisioned

… an independent, non-partisan vehicle to engage the public, opinion leaders, policymakers, and the media in a dialogue on organizing and bargaining rights.

… a facilitator of strong ties among progressives, socially-responsible employers, and academics by locating workers’ rights within the broader, progressive agenda.

… another voice to counter a decades long campaign to eliminate unions led by the National Right to Work Committee and subsequent anti-union groups.

This vision would have remained unrealized without the ideas, leadership, and financial resources of our Early Supporters. The substantial seed money granted from the labor community, particularly the AFL-CIO, enabled American Rights at Work to get off the ground and start on strong footing.

This year as we reflect on the solidarity demonstrated in Wisconsin and across the country, we recognize the foresight of our founders who have enabled American Rights at Work to educate and advocate for the right to form unions and bargain collectively at this critical time in our nation’s history.

These individuals and supporting organizations have left a legacy of commitment to working women and men with the formation of American Rights at Work.
