Hours: Full time
Salary: Paid internship, range depends on experience/education.

American Rights at Work is a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on protecting and advancing workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively. We work to expose injustices in the workplace, raise standards and demand stronger protections for America’s workers, and lift up the right to organize as critical to rebuilding the middle class. 

Position Description: 
Are you passionate about making life better for workers in America? Are you interested in pursuing media relations or communications in a non-profit setting, but need more hands-on experience first? If so, we hope you’ll consider applying for the Communications Internship at American Rights at Work.
The Media Relations & Communications Intern will support the Communications Department by providing writing, research, and logistical assistance for the organization's media outreach and communications team. Administrative work related directly to these projects should be expected. In carrying out these duties, the intern will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced communications professionals and learn about workers’ rights, media tracking and outreach, and proactive media strategies.

Specific duties may include:
  • Assisting with tracking, distributing, and organizing media clips.
  • Helping research, write, and edit press materials—including letters to the editor, press kits, news releases, and other external materials. 
  • Distributing news releases, press kits, publications and other material to news media.
  • Assisting with press outreach calls.
  • Assisting in maintenance of email lists, databases, editorial calendar, and website.
  • Responding to and/or rerouting website/email user inquiries, problems, and information requests.
  • Assisting with researching, editing, and posting content for organization’s website and blog.
  • Helping maintain and grow organizational presence in social media.
  • Assisting with mailings, events, and office organization.
  • Assisting with daily activities in communications office.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate/graduate journalism, communications, public relations, political science, public policy, English, and labor relations majors strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Prior internship, externship, or employment in communications field preferred.
  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills.
  • Good interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Attention to detail a must.
  • Experience on social networks; experience producing content for social networks and/or blogs a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, prioritize, and perform a wide variety of tasks over the course of the workday.
  • Motivation, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.
  • Analytical, organizational, and general office skills.
  • Strong computer competency; proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • Interest in and knowledge of news media, labor, social justice, and/or progressive policy issues.
  • Familiarity with basic HTML, web content editing, graphic design, database and/or desktop publishing software a plus.
