On June 24, the American Rights at Work Education Fund brought more than 400
guests together at our fourth annual Eleanor
Roosevelt Human Rights Awards Celebration. Our guests represented a diverse
mosaic of today's workers' rights movement-one that is growing more active,
popular, creative, successful, and necessary with each passing day-and included
leaders from the human rights, civil rights, faith, environmental justice,
student, arts, and labor communities.
The honorees this year showed the importance of partnership and cooperation
in strengthening the economic opportunities and rights of America's workers. Gamesa
Technology Corporation partners with government, workers, and their unions
to harness the potential for renewable energy while protecting workers' rights.
The Leadership
Conference on Civil Rights is a valued partner in the progressive movement
that stands up for the belief that workers' rights are fundamental to both
civil rights and human rights. Governor
Kathleen Sebelius brings Kansas'
business and labor communities together around common goals, while standing up
for collective bargaining rights and good-paying jobs.
Pam Parker, a jazz vocalist with deep connections to the labor movement,
kicked off the celebration with the classic labor song "Bread and Roses." The standing-room only crowd listened as
Majora Carter of Sustainable South Bronx discussed the need for jobs which
create economically and environmentally sustainable communities. Workers from FedEx Ground told a
harrowing story of alleged racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination in the
workplace, highlighting the importance of organizations which stand up for
workers' rights. And labor leaders like
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and American Rights at Work Board Chair David Bonior
thanked this year's honorees for their partnership in the struggle for workers'
rights.
We would like to thank everyone whose support for this event
and our work all year round helps build powerful momentum for workers'
rights. We look forward to continuing to work together to make the right
to organize a reality for America's
workers.
