Huge failure at mine safety agency
February 04, 2008

What's wrong with mine safety czar Richard Stickler?

Coal miner

More than 4,000 mine safety failures in six years.

Send Stickler a note now!

Many of us watched in horror last summer as miners lost their lives in the Crandall Canyon mine collapse in Utah, and before that, the disasters at Sago, Darby and Aracoma mines. After multiple debacles, you’d think the government would make mine safety a top priority.  Think again.  Recent reports uncovered a huge failure at the federal agency in charge of mine safety.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) failed to fine more than 4,000 safety & health violations over the last six years for mines that broke regulations.

Richard Stickler, the man responsible for mine safety in this country, needs some help. We put together some ideas for how Mr. Stickler can actually do his job.

Stop the King's Penny Pinching
January 17, 2008

One penny per pound. Florida farmworkers have been fighting for an increase of just one penny more for every pound of tomatoes they pick for the fast food industry.

You already helped convince McDonald’s to pay this extra penny – last April, McDonald’s followed the lead of Yum! Brands (owner of Taco Bell and other national food chains) in increasing wages and improving working conditions for these workers.

But Burger King is a different story.  Not only is Burger King refusing to work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to improve labor standards, it’s also trying to undermine the agreements already in place with other fast food chains.

Stand up for farmworkers by demanding that Burger King play fair and treat workers with respect. Activists working for farmworker justice will deliver your signature, along with thousands of others, to Burger King in February.

Help Us Go Big in 2008
December 26, 2007

Help us make 2008 a big year for workers' rights.

ARAW Gift Magnet

Give today and we'll send you our special magnet.

We've done some amazing things together this year. In 2007, our activists sent more than 390,000 letters to corporations and lawmakers demanding that they respect workers' rights. We're going to make 2008 even better, with you behind us.

Only a few more days to make a gift of $35, $50, $100, or more before 2007 comes to a close.

Look what happens when your actions and contributions meet our strategy and drive:

  • The House voted overwhelmingly to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, and we managed to secure a historic 51 votes in the Senate.
  • Congress finally enacted a long-deserved increase in the minimum wage.
  • McDonald’s increased wages and improved working conditions for the workers who pick its tomatoes.

Successes like these don't happen by themselves. They take resources, dedication, strategy, and grassroots pressure. Your donation today makes them possible.  We need your help to go big in 2008.

In less than three weeks, you’ve sent more than 15,000 letters to FedEx Ground in support of its drivers’ rights. Our report has received press in major news outlets. Emails pour in daily.

To wage our most powerful campaign during what's left of 2007, we need to raise $10,000 in the next 10 days while the news media are still talking about shopping and shipping.

Your gift will help us tell drivers' stories far and wide, educate thousands of people, generate grassroots pressure – and force FedEx Ground to clean up its act.

»  Contribute now to help us raise $10,000 by December 14.

FedEx your Holiday Gifts? Don't Do It.
November 26, 2007

Take the No-Ship Pledge This holiday season, FedEx Ground drivers will work extra hard to deliver our gifts on time. They provide a valuable service – but their bosses don't value them enough to respect their rights.

For a corporation like FedEx, the slightest whiff of dissatisfaction among its customers is a serious concern.  As a consumer, you can deliver a powerful message on behalf of these workers.  A simple pledge.

Let FedEx Ground know its customers won't fund unionbusting.  We'll deliver the signatures to company management to show them we mean business.

» Take the pledge: Don't use FedEx to ship your holiday gifts.
